The new Nokia N900 smartphone is a pace-setting mobile device which really delivers the goods - there’s no denying it’s a lovely piece of gear, packed with an amazing range of audio and visual onboard features.
It’s a classy internet phone, which many are claiming is a worthy rival to the groundbreaking
Appl
e iPhone, and it comes with one of the most versatile mobile web browsers to
be found anywhere on the market.
The Nokia N900 runs the Linux-based Maemo 5 platform which offers superb customisation options and is packed with multitasking capability. The Maemo platform had previously been available on internet tablets, not mobile phones.
The N900 is slightly heavier and thicker than some of its predecessors but that's no big deal really when you consider the number of impressive new features you are getting FOR your money.
The N900 has a beautiful 3.5 inch resistive touch screen which is incredibly sharp and bright and features a built in accelerometer. It also has a brightness control and an ambient light sensor.
The screen is extremely responsive to touch whether you're browsing the internet, opening an application or scrolling through on-screen lists. The N900’s fast and fast ARM Cortex A8 processor means there’s no more having to close one app before you open another.
The N900 provides the perfect browsing experience
Browsing the web with fast wireless broadband is a real joy on the Nokia N900 - you
can zoom in and out on the pages of the Mozilla-based web browser simply by drawing
a spiral circle with your finger. A clever 'hover' mode lets you simulate a mouse
and you can scroll the page up and down, left and right, just by gently glid
ing your
finger across the screen.
The Maemo browser also supports Flash 9.4, enabling it to play embedded Youtube videos and BBC iPlayer video.
The N900 has four home screen panes and you can move between them by gliding your finger from right to left and vice versa - each pane can be personalised with shortcuts and widgets. The number of home screens on the N900 can be reduced if you wish.
For typing and text entry that Nokia N900 comes with a full QWERTY keyboard which is accessed when the screen is pushed upwards the buttons at the keys are quite large for a smart phone or internet tablet and have a texture which helps to prevent your fingers from slipping.
There are various physical controls on the N900's exterior - these include a volume control, power button, lock switch, headphone jack, a stylus, a micro-USB post and a camera activation and capture key. There is also a handy kick stand which allows the N900 to be propped up for watching slide shows and video movies.
The N900 - a great device for all your video and audio needs
The N900 is well catered for on the connectivity front too with support for WiFi, Bluetooth and HSDPA.
The device also excels where media is concerned - it includes a 3.5mm headphone socket, an FM tuner for all your radio needs, and FM transmitter to allow wireless music playback through a radio and a massive 32GB storage capacity for all your music and videos.
And the Nokia N900 is no slouch when it comes to taking pictures and shooting video - it features a five megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss optics and a dual LED flash unit so the quality of pictures is most impressive, providing images with plenty of detail and balanced colour. The on board video mode shoots at 848 x 480 at 25 frames per second. The N900 also features geo-tagging which adds location-specific information to your pictures, enabling you to see on an online map where your images were taken.
